BEGINNINGS

What are the essentials of being a Christian?

Exploring the world of faith can be a challenge. For some it is a gradual awakening to new possibilities to others a flash of lightening that suddenly makes sense of all the darkness around. Whichever is the case for you, these beginnings can be disorienting as old certainties are put into question, and new ideas presented that can seem counter intuitive. The challenge of faith is grappling with the God you have met, and holding him to the world around you. As you do, you discover that superficial certainties are questioned, and old ways of life challenged. All the time we are asking what is a Christian anyway?

The Christian life is a relationship with God. A new believer is developing a new relationship with all the awkwardness and insecurity of any relationship at its beginnings. With this relationship things are more challenging because it depends on new avenues of communication, we start as a spiritual baby. So all sorts of questions come: What is this relationship with God? How do I pray or talk with God? How do I meet God in the Bible? What is this quiet time or devotional time that people talk about? How do I feed or nurture my faith? Under Relate with God, these questions and more are answered, with guides to help you get started.

Many new Christians struggle to reconcile the strongly held views of our society with the strongly held views of other Christians. Science and God don't seem to go together; literature scholars ask, can I trust the Bible? These challenges to faith are not as difficult as one might think and are often based on a poor understanding of both science and scholarship. The Challenges to Faith pages to help you see the issues for yourself and provide space to work through these issues with God.

The new life of faith can seem perplexing. How am I supposed to live as a Christian? There is this big book, so how am I supposed to make sense of the Bible? What are the important principles that I can live by to please God? What am I supposed to do as one of Jesus' followers? Don't worry, help is at hand! Under Live the Faith key Bible passages are brought to you to help you understand the basics of living the Christian life with freedom. You will discover that the Christian lifestyle is not a list of dos and don'ts but living faithfully in a covenant of love with your Holy God and Father. The diagrams will help you understand the key principles around which the Christian life is built, and even a contrast with the ways of our secular world. (They open in a new tab.)
