Investing in God’s people from life to life
These pages are designed to aid study or investigation for Christian discipleship through individual Bible study, Cell groups, Home groups, or meeting one to one. The questions could be used alone allowing each person to use their own Bible.
Make Disciples
Jesus called on His followers to make disciples. So, what is a disciple? How do we go about making disciples? The first step must be to understand what is a disciple. So, we explore what Jesus spoke about discipleship. Other New Testament writers help us understand how Christians develop spiritually in their discipleship, and the fruit that can be seen when people to grow in Christ. These are found under 'Principles of Discipleship'
Anyone who influences others is a leader even if they have no organisational position. Leaders find that people are influenced by them and tend to follow their example. Thus Paul told the Thessalonians, 'We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you, not only the Gospel of God, but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us. (1 Thess 2:8) One of the key elements of spiritual leadership is that the leader is investing in people from life to life through love. This takes Christian leadership beyond being a management exercise to a spiritual ministry worked out in partnership with God. 'God's Leader' explores the Bible to find out what is involved in this kind of leadership. Paul was particularly open about how he went about his ministry. This is explored in 'People who make disciples.'
The Bible develops the Spiritual side of making disciples in some detail. When it comes to the forms and methods however it is rather sketchy. This leaves us great freedom to discover the means that are appropriate for our culture. There are two sections that provide resources to help you develop practically. 'Life to Life' explores how to meet up with people to pass on what personally you have learned of the life of faith and ministry. 'Practical group ministry' gives some practical tips on how to lead groups in a way that will develop learning and engagement in the group members. Since this ministry is fundamentally from life to life, and it is the life that draws out the practicality, I have included a number of reflections on leadership as examples.
Whether you are a Christian to whom others look up, a small group leader, a leader responsible for discipleship, leading a Missional Community you will find resources here to help you develop in Christlike leadership, and to develop those you influence to be fruitful in their discipleship.
