Introduction

It is good to gain depth.  With a deep understanding of the Bible we have a closer more accurate picture of what God actually said, not mere first impressions. In going deep, God’s Spirit has the opportunity to work His Word into our lives.  It is this transformation, as against knowledge that we seek.

Bible Zone

The Bible is not specific on how to go deep in the Bible, but the outcome is plain.

Teaching

Colossians 3:16  is in the middle of a series of teaching points.

  1. What should Jesus’ teaching do?
  2. What does it mean for teaching to live in a person?
  3. How might that come about in your life?

Colossians 3:16  Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

Meditating

This passage in Psalm 1:1-3 looks at the outcome of spending time with God in His word through meditation.

  1. What contrast does the Bible make with the one who meditates on God’s word?
  2. How can meditating guard against ending up in the places mentioned in v1?
  3. What can God’s word do to make a person become as described in v3?

Psalm 1:1-3

1 Oh, the joys of those who do not  follow the advice of the wicked,

or stand around with sinners,  or join in with mockers.

2 But they delight in the law of the LORD,  meditating on it day and night.

3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank,  bearing fruit each season.

Their leaves never wither,  and they prosper in all they do.

Searching the Scriptures

Acts 17:10-12 is an episode from the missionary journey taking the message of Jesus into Europe for the first time.  Paul and his companions, far from being intimidated, encourage the hearers to evaluate their message.

  1. How are the Berean’s described?
  2. What did they do with the Bible?

Acts 17:10-12   10 That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.12 As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.
