Introduction

God’s care is a foundation for life.  It brings us freedom to stretch out and take risks in faith, knowing that as we go trusting Him, He will pick up the consequences.  Because He cares we have the freedom to really live!

Bible Zone

The zone below looks at two passages.

God the Shepherd

God cares for us because He loves us as a Father.  Rather than give text book descriptions of His care, the Bible tends to tell the stories or give the testimony of people who have been through difficult situations and seen His care.  One such is Psalm 23 which describes the relationship between God and man in the terms of a shepherd to his sheep.  We will look at this in parts.

  1. How does David the author feel about his shepherd God?
  2. What needs are looked after in this situation?

1 The LORD is my shepherd;  I have all that I need.

2 He lets me rest in green meadows;  he leads me beside peaceful streams.

  1. How does David feel about being led by his shepherd God?
  2. What characterises the paths that they take together?
  3. On what basis does David not fear?

3   He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths,  bringing honor to his name.

4 Even when I walk  through the darkest valley,*I will not be afraid,  for you are close beside me.Your rod and your staff  protect and comfort me.

  1. How does David express the level of confidence he has in God?
  2. Notice the degree of abundance that David experiences in God’s care.  Why would God go to such lengths for a person?

5 You prepare a feast for me  in the presence of my enemies.

You honor me by anointing my head with oil.  My cup overflows with blessings.

6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me  all the days of my life,

and I will live in the house of the LORD  forever.

Assured of God’s Care

Jesus assures us of God’s care, and expresses it in a way that asks us to depend on Him.  Matthew 6

  1. How important to God does Jesus say that we are?
  2. How does Jesus want us to trust in God?
  3. For what does Jesus want us to trust in God?
  4. How could you discover that God cares for you?

Matthew 6:28-34     28 "And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing,29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

31 "So don't worry about these things, saying, 'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?'32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.33 Seek the Kingdom of God* above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

34 "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.
