Introduction
Joy is experienced when hopes are fulfilled or in anticipation of hopes being fulfilled. In the Bible we see joy at an abundant harvest or fruitfulness. This joy is then extended into our relationship with God when we see the fruitfulness of God at work.
Bible Zone
Joy comes through seeing an abundance of fruitfulness.
Psalm 4: 7 You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.
Jesus gives hope of a future joy to the disciples before His crucifixion. He knows that they need this hope to get them through the trial that is ahead.
John 16: 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.21 It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world.
Joy through God’s work in people
When we see that God has won a victory, then we can experience joy. We see these victories most in the transformation of people’s lives
Philemon 7 Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God's people.
How can we experience joy when there is trouble in life?
James 1: 2 Dear brothers and sisters,* when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
Hebrews 12: 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.* Because of the joy* awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God's throne.
Sometimes God gives joy directly independent of circumstances.
Romans 15: 13 I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
