Introduction
The first chapters of Genesis describe our origins. Origins are vital to understand why we are here and what our purpose is. Irrespective of your views on how factual or historical these texts are, they are worth examination at least from a spiritual perspective - What was God up to when He created? What was man’s part supposed to be? How did it all go wrong?
Bible Zone
Genesis has two key passages outlining the beginning.
- God Commands Creation - the God of authority. He commands and it happens.
- God Serves Creation - the God of relationship sees needs and serves creation.
NOTE: Since the texts are long, there are two ways of accessing them. Either in the box with the slide bar, or in the following links - Genesis 1 & Genesis 2.
Read Genesis 1 and look for recurring phrases.
- What do you see of God’s manner and values by the process of creation?
- What purpose do you see in the order of creation? - For instance, what is first and what is last? How does everything in the middle bridge the two? (Don’t get caught up with the science / Bible debate, rather try to understand the passage for what it is trying to say.)*
- What was God’s purpose for mankind?
- What significance is there to the fact that God rested on the 7th day?
- So, how do you fit in with God’s creation?
