Introduction
Jesus has paid the price to redeem us from everything that holds us captive, and so in Him we have true freedom. Freedom is an aspirations of our age, yet few ask the key questions - Freedom from what? What is the cost of Freedom? If we don’t understand what holds us captive it is difficult to gain freedom, or understand the price for freedom.
Bible Zone
Galatians 4:3-5 describes how we are saved from being under law - the religious code.
Galatians 4:3-5 And that's the way it was with us before Christ came. We were like children; we were slaves to the basic spiritual principles* of this world.
4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law.5 God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.
Many point to a golden age when there was freedom. 1 Peter 1:18-21 declares the life we inherit is empty. We are saved not by physical things but Jesus, and His death.
1 Peter 1:18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver.19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days.
21 Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.
Colossians 1:12-14 describes how Jesus has redeemed us from the occult powers of darkness, and the forces of evil behind them.
Colossians 1:12 always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.13 For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son,14 who purchased our freedom* and forgave our sins.
Freed from the Curse of the Law
The law which was given through Moses introduces a curse for those who do not live by it. In Galatians 3:12-14 Jesus buys us back from curses.
12 This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, "It is through obeying the law that a person has life."*
13 But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."*14 Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised* Holy Spirit through faith.
