Introduction

Jesus is not just another person, a good man, or a prophet.  Jesus is God’s only Son. He has a unique position in the Universe.  His words have a weight far beyond the truth of proven logic or the authority of a breadth of experience.  Jesus connects directly with the Father and acts on His authority.  Jesus’ involvement in the Universe is seen in greater detail in the following link.

Bible Zone

The zone below looks at three passages.

Jesus’ Identity

Relationships are significant to our identity.  Look at how Jesus expresses His relationship to God, so defining His identity in John 5:18-23,

  1. People took objection to Jesus.  What issues are mentioned?
  2. How does Jesus relate to God?
  3. How secure is Jesus in His identity as the Son of God?

John 5:18-23  18 So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.

19 So Jesus explained, "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.21 For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.22 In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge,23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.

God values Jesus

The Father not only recognises Jesus as His Son, He also both honours and values Him.

Luke 9:32-35.

  1. How does the Father view Jesus?
  2. How does the Father honour and Value Jesus in this text?
  3. How are we called upon to honour Jesus?

Luke 9:32-35   32 Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus' glory and the two men standing with him.33 As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, "Master, it's wonderful for us to be here! Let's make three shelters as memorials*—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."34 But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.

35 Then a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, my Chosen One.* Listen to him."

One and Only Son

Jesus is God’s only Son.  We are called sons of God.  How does this work?  John 1:10-18 highlights Jesus (called the Word here - see v14)  as the One and Only Son.

  1. Who is Jesus, and what has He done?
  2. How does Jesus help us?
  3. How does the ‘One and Only Son’ differ from those who become children of God?

John 1:10-18  10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn't recognize him.11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

14 So the Word became human* and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.* And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son.

15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.'"

16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.*17 For the law was given through Moses, but God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God,* is near to the Father's heart. He has revealed God to us.
