Introduction

The life Jesus gives has amazing impact.  He revolutionises our lives and changes our relationships.  It is only right that He receives the glory for what He has done in us. The message is passed on by changed people.

Bible Zone

Be a witness

Our God is a God who testifies to a world that often seems disinterested.  As we follow Him He transforms us to be the same way.  Consider these texts -

First look at what Jesus had to say - Matthew 5:14-16

  1. How does Jesus describe who we are?
  2. What does it mean to be a light for people? - what light? what people?
  3. How do you need to change in order to let your light shine?

Matthew 5:14-16   14 "You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Followers Draw People

What Jesus said to His disciples as he called on them to follow Him? Matthew 4:18-19

  1. What did Jesus ask His future disciples to do?
  2. What did Jesus promise to do to them if they did it?
  3. What would it mean for you to fish for people?

Matthew 4:18-19   18 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.19 Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!"

lifestyle of a witness

The light that shines in a dark world must not be darkness, but a light that reflects God’s glory.  This point is made in 1 Peter 2:12

  1. What attitudes could be expressed towards Christians?
  2. What lifestyle is expected of Jesus’ followers?
  3. What outcome is God looking for when we live in this way?

1 Peter 2:12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.*

God delivers Message

Up till now we have seen people passively ‘being a light’.  God also actively sends out His message. Romans 10:13-15

  1. What chain of requirements are there for a person to believe?
  2. What is God contributing to this?
  3. What do we contribute?

Romans 10:  13 For "Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved."*   14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, "How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!"*

The Message

The message requires content.  For that go to the following - Becoming a Christian, or one of the illustrations - The Bridge   The Journey
