Matthew 18:10
“See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels always see the face of my Father in heaven.”
We were walking around the centre of town trying to find a shop that could change the battery on my watch. It was a rather specialised watch with rather a specialised battery, so we were looking for a shop that sold the same type of watch. It seemed we had gone down every street and looked in every jeweller. Nothing. I was getting fed up and had decided we had just wasted a perfectly good afternoon with a wild goose chase. We were heading home. As we rather dejectedly returned, it became apparent my son Jeremy had not given up. He was asking whether we had been down this side street. I looked at it and said no, but we were going home now, we were not going down any more streets. In that way that only small children have, he completely ignored me and prayed that God would make there be a jeweller there with the right kind of watch. My wife pointed out that since Jeremy had prayed maybe we had better honour the prayer and look. I managed to restrain my irritation. We were going home! I had given up, this was a complete waste of time, to add to the rest of the waste of an afternoon. It was not as if we had not already prayed about it ... But off we went. There, twenty yards down the road was a Jewellers that I had never noticed before and in it, amazingly for such a small shop was the same watch. We went in. Yes, they had the battery and changed it there and then.
The afternoon – Saved by the faith of a seven year old.
My oldest son is really keen on whistling. There have been times when after his piano practice he has spent an extra few minutes at the keyboard setting off background effects to accompany him for whistling practice. The result has been to inspire his siblings to follow suit. Everyone is into whistling. Then they asked me if I could whistle. No, I was afraid not. I have tried on and off over the years, but after my failures at the age of four or five I had not really tried with much heart. My daughter in particular was particularly sad about this. After her triumph of succeeding, it seemed that the joy was in some way spoilt by the fact that the family was not united with some common ability. Her response was to pray. I heard that she was praying for some time, but had not taken too much notice. Then one day as I was putting her to bed and she announced to me that soon I would be whistling. I did not want to disappoint her too much, so I thought I should point out that I would only be able to whistle if I tried – with the obvious implication that I was not planning on it. Obvious implications seem to elude four year olds however, so she asked me to try. Well now I was caught and I knew it, so I gave a try and whistled! It was not the most beautiful whistle, nothing even worth mentioning compared to my oldest son – but it was the first real noise that had come out since I was four or five. What is more it did not persist, when I try now I cannot, but it seems that it was important for my daughter at that time. God gives good gifts to His children.
God takes seriously the faith of the children. I too need to take their faith seriously. I may be older but we are one in Christ.
